Hank Fishkind Mar. 4 -- Replacing School Property Tax With Expanded Sales Taxes
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
By: David Pitman
(March 4, 2008) -- 90.7's David Pitman and economist Hank Fishkind discuss a proposal making its way through the state Taxation and Budget Reform Commission that would eliminate the school portion of all property tax bills, and replace the lost revenue with a one-cent increase in the state sales tax, along with repealing tax exemptions for certain goods and services. Dr. Fishkind presented his own study to the TBRC in which he says those expanded sales taxes would cover the loss in revenue. The proposal has already made it through a TBRC committee, and if the full TBRC approves it, it could show up as a constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
